School tours are by reservation only, and preferably on Tuesdays-Wednesdays-Thursdays, from 8:30am - 3:300pm. To make a reservation call 608.654.5151, or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
School tours can be designed for students of all ages, including preschoolers. In fact, the majority of the tours we've given have been to younger age groups.
Activities may happen in any order:
1. Apple Picking - Individual bags given to each child accommodates a few apples (15 min.)
2. Learning Shed - Learn the importance of a healthy wild bee population and how photosynthesis makes trees grow (15 min.)
3. Visit the Animals - Assortment of Barnyard Animals...And Alpacas, Nitro & Cosmo! (15 min.)
4. Recess: play on the Tire Gym or climb Straw Bale Mountain and enjoy an apple filled cookie (15 min.)
5. Back to School.
The whole package (Activities, apples, instruction, etc) $4 each. Teachers and aides can pick an apple to eat for free.
Bigger groups can be divided into 2 or 3 smaller groups that can rotate through the various activities, but there is an 8-10 child minimum.
As a teacher, here are some tips you may want to consider before bringing your class to the orchard:
Prepare your class and yourself for inclement weather and field conditions. The orchard is located on a ridge-top, and has cool breezes and wet morning grasses. Don't forget bee kits if you have students who are allergic.
And, please remember:
The orchard is a working farm! While we have made a commitment to teaching children about apples, this is not our primary job. Please be active in the control and care of your class.
